Yeti

In some popular culture the Yeti is better known as the Abominable Snowman. This monstrous creature stands erect on two legs and is a large ape-like being with white fur covering his body.

Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Howard-Bury coined the name “Abominable Snowman” in his book accounting the crossing of Lhakpa La at 21,000 feet where he saw footprints which his Sherpa guide identified as a wild man of the snows. The guide called it ” metoh-kangmi ” which translates to man- bear snow-man.

In the 20th century an increase in the amount of Westerners attempting to scale mountains in the area also increased the frequency of sightings of strange tracks and the elusive beast itself.

In 1925 a member of the Royal Geographical Society observed the creature himself for about a minute from 200 yards away, near the Zemu Glacier. The beast was unmistakably of human form but much larger and covered in fur. Upon the descent from the mountain they spotted the creature’s footprints.

In 2007 a television team “Destination Truth” reported finding a series of footprints and some Yeti fur. Casts were taken of the footprints and experts believe them too morphologically accurate to be fake or man-made. The TV show’s forensic analyst concluded that the hair contained an unknown DNA.

At a conference in Russia in 2011, scientists and enthusiasts insisted that they have 95% evidence of Yeti’s existence. That same year a hunter reported that he had captured a Yeti when the gorilla-like creature was trying to kill one of his sheep. Later the Yeti could not be produced but the hunter swears it was in his custody.

Those who are skeptical about the possible Yeti sightings suggest that the creature they are witnessing is a Tibetan blue bear. Others speculate these reported creatures could be present day specimens of the extinct giant ape.

Testing on hair from an unidentified animal in north India had to be compared to samples in the GenBank and matched a sample of an ancient polar bear. Some suggest that an undetected hybrid developed over the years.

Reports continue to pour in. Recently mountaineers with the Indian Army released images of footprints of the snowy Bigfoot creature. The mysterious footprints measured 32×25 inches. The DNA analysis conducted from their findings suggested that the Yeti was a genetic makeup of a descendant of an ancient polar bear and alleged Yeti mummy in the Indian region of the Himalayas.
